The city of Aheloy is located in Southeastern Bulgaria, on the shore of the Great Bay of Burgas, and is part of the municipality of Pomorie.
The terrain is mostly flat, to the northwest of the city there is a small hilly area known as the Strolata area (the old name of Strel Bair).
Aheloy has its own microclimate, formed by the flat terrain, Stara Planina Mountain and the Black Sea. It has very mild winters and cool summers, which makes it a pleasant and desirable place to live and relax. The temperature ranges from -4 to +30 °C.
An important event related to the history of Aheloy was the battle of the Aheloy River on August 20, 917. when Tsar Simeon I defeated a large Byzantine army led by Leo Phokas. After these battles, Bulgaria became one of the most powerful powers not only in the Balkans, but throughout Southeastern Europe.
A very large part of the inhabitants of Ahela are heirs of Thracian Bulgarians, who were resettled here from Belomorsk and Odrinsky Thrace during the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and the First World War.
The lands on which Acheloy arose today were for a long time part of an important Roman route called Via Pontica, connecting the bustling commercial cities of Mesembria and Anchialo. The road itself was made entirely of stone macadamia pavement.
The old Roman fortress of Chim was once located next to the current bridge of the city, and there was a watchtower on one of the highest peaks in the area. The remains of ancient buildings and fortifications are still preserved.
There is a river named after the Old Town. The area around it is rich in groundwater, which supplies most of the city's residents with clean and drinkable water through wells.
