The city of Aheloy is located in Southeastern Bulgaria, on the shore of the big Burgas Bay, and is part of the municipality of Pomorie.
The terrain is mostly flat, to the northwest of the city there is a small hilly area known as the area of Strolata (the old name of Streli Bair).
Aheloy has its own microclimate, formed by flat terrain, Stara Planina Mountain and the Black Sea. It has very mild winters and cool summers, which makes it a pleasant and desirable place to live and relax. The temperature ranges from -4 to +30 °C.
An important event related to the history of Acheloy was the battle of the Acheloy River on August 20, 917. when Tsar Simeon I defeated a large Byzantine army led by Leo Phokas. Near the current bridge of the city there was once an old Roman fortress of Chim, on one of the highest peaks in the area there was a watchtower. The remains of ancient buildings and fortifications are still preserved.
